Project Overview:
This project involved creating a new charcoal block paved driveway at a home in Tonbridge with a smooth natural grey edging to frame the layout. The original driveway area was a loose gravel surface that had become uneven and untidy. The homeowner wanted a clean, modern and hard wearing finish that would improve parking and the overall appearance of the property.
The completed driveway now offers a smart and durable surface that is easy to maintain and significantly enhances the entrance to the home.

Before Work Began
The original driveway consisted of mixed gravel that had shifted over time. Parking was difficult and the loose stones often spilled onto the pavement. The existing levels were uneven and the area lacked a defined border to separate the driveway from the surrounding ground.
How the New Driveway Was Installed
Clearing and Excavation
The loose gravel surface was fully removed and the driveway area was excavated to the correct depth. This provided the solid foundation needed for the new block paving.
Preparation of the Sub Base
A deep MOT Type 1 hardcore sub base was installed and compacted across the full driveway. This step ensures long term stability and prevents movement of the paving.
Setting the Natural Grey Edging
Natural grey blocks were laid around the outer edge to create a smooth and attractive border. The lighter grey tone contrasts beautifully with the charcoal centre paving.
Laying the Block Paving
Charcoal block paving was installed in a neat herringbone pattern. This pattern locks firmly together and is ideal for driveways because of its strength and durability. The dark charcoal colour provides a modern look and complements the brickwork of the property.
Final Sanding and Compaction
Kiln dried sand was brushed into the joints and the driveway was compacted to secure the paving. The edges were finished and the whole area was cleaned to complete the installation.
The Finished Driveway:
The new charcoal driveway with natural grey edging has completely transformed the front of the property. The combination of dark paving and light edging creates a clean and stylish appearance. The surface is now stable, level and ready for regular use. The homeowner was extremely pleased with the upgraded look and the improvement to their everyday parking.
