Project Overview:
This project involved rebuilding an old retaining wall and transforming a tired entrance into a solid and attractive feature at a property in Tonbridge. The original wall had become discoloured and worn over time and the existing steps were uneven and difficult to use.
The homeowner wanted a clean and safe access point with an upgraded finish that complemented the new driveway.
The completed wall and steps now provide a strong structure and a smart entrance finished with grey Indian sandstone.

Initial Condition
Before the work began, the retaining wall showed signs of age and weather damage. Moss and staining were visible across the brickwork and the existing paving slabs on the steps were uneven and worn. The layout still functioned but no longer offered a clean or welcoming approach to the front door.
How the New Wall and Steps Were Built
Removal of the Old Structure
The original step surfaces and weathered finishes were removed. The retaining wall was prepared for reconstruction and any loose or damaged sections were taken down to ensure stability.
Building the New Brickwork
A new retaining wall was constructed using strong and durable bricks that match the character of the property. Care was taken to create smooth lines and a safe enclosure around the steps.
Reforming the Steps
The steps were rebuilt to create an even rise and run. This improves safety and provides a much more comfortable access to the front entrance.
Laying the Grey Indian Sandstone
Grey Indian sandstone slabs were installed on all step treads and on the top landing area. The sandstone provides a modern and attractive finish with a natural textured surface that is both durable and slip resistant.
Pointing and Finishing
All sandstone joints were pointed neatly and the brickwork was cleaned down. The finished structure now looks fresh, strong and well presented.
The Finished Entrance:
The new retaining wall and steps have completely renewed the appearance of the entrance. The crisp grey sandstone contrasts beautifully with the red brickwork and ties in neatly with the nearby driveway.
The steps are level and safe, and the overall structure gives the home a clean, well maintained look. The homeowner was extremely happy with the transformation!
