Project Overview:
The existing driveway was a worn and uneven tarmac surface that was detracting from the property’s curb appeal. The aim was to excavate the old driveway and install a completely new, visually appealing, and durable block paving surface. The specific design brief was to use ‘Autumn Gold’ pavers laid in a herringbone pattern, framed by a matching soldier course border and a smart charcoal pinstripe for definition.

Process:
Excavation & Ground Preparation: The exisiting tarmac and any old base layers were broken up using a mini digger and removed from the site. The area was excavated to the correct depth to allow for a new, solid sub-base and the subsequent paving layers.
Sub-Base Installation: A geotextile membrane was laid to prevent weed growth and stabilise the ground. A substantial layer of MOT Type 1 hardcore was installed and compacted thoroughly with a wacker plate to create a strong, stable foundation for the driveway.
Edging & Border Installation: The perimeter edging kerbs and the block paving border, including the charcoal pinstripe, were laid on a concrete bed. This locks in the main paving area and ensures the structure does not spread or shift over time.
Laying the Paving: A layer of sharp sand was screeded to a consistent, level depth across the entire area. The main ‘Autumn Gold’ block pavers were then laid by hand in the classic 45-degree herringbone pattern.
Jointing & Compaction: Once all blocks were in place, kiln-dried sand was brushed into all the joints. A final pass with the wacker plate settled the blocks firmly into the sand bed and locked them together, creating a durable, interlocking surface.
