Project Overview:
The project began with a garden that had great potential but was let down by an old, tired block paving patio. As seen in the initial photos, the existing surface was uneven, with significant weed growth between the blocks. It lacked character and failed to provide a functional or inviting space for homeowners to enjoy their garden and conservatory. The goal was to replace it with a stunning, natural stone patio that would elevate the outdoor space.

Process:
Site Excavation & Preparation: The first crucial step was to completely clear the site. This involved breaking up and removing the entirety of the old block paving and disposing of it responsibly. We then excavated the entire patio area to the required depth, removing soil and old sub-base material to create a solid, uniform foundation for the new construction.
Sub-Base & Groundworks: A solid foundation is key to a long-lasting patio. We installed a new, heavy-duty geotextile membrane to suppress weed growth and prevent the sub-base from mixing with the soil below. On top of this, we laid a substantial layer of MOT Type 1 aggregate, which was then meticulously levelled and compacted using a professional plate compactor to create a strong and stable base.
Laying the Sandstone Slabs: With the foundation prepared, we began laying the multi-sized slabs of high-quality Indian sandstone. To achieve the classic, rustic look, the slabs were laid in a random, interlocking pattern. Each individual slab was laid on a full, wet mortar bed, which ensures complete adhesion and prevents any rocking or voids beneath the stone. We carefully checked the levels throughout to ensure a consistent, gentle fall for water run-off, directing it away from the house.
Jointing & Finishing: For the final touch, the patio joints were meticulously pointed using a high performance, brush-in resin compound. This modern jointing method is superior to traditional sand and cement as it is permeable, allowing water to drain through, yet highly durable and resistant to weed growth. The light-coloured compound was chosen to beautifully contrast with the warm, earthy tones of the sandstone, defining each slab and making the natural colours pop.
