Project Overview:
This project involved transforming a tired and uneven front driveway into a smart natural grey block paved driveway at a property in Tunbridge Wells. The original area consisted of worn concrete and sloping access that no longer provided a clean or practical parking solution. The homeowner wanted a modern, durable surface that improved access to the property while enhancing kerb appeal.
The finished driveway now provides a smooth, hard-wearing parking area with a clean and contemporary look that complements the style of the home.
Project Details
Location: Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Paving Colour: Natural Grey
Edging: Charcoal / Dark Grey
Pattern: Herringbone
Before Work Began
The original driveway surface was dated and uneven, with visible wear and poor drainage. The sloped access and old concrete made parking awkward, and the area lacked definition and structure. Overall, the driveway did not match the appearance of the property and needed a full upgrade.
How the New Driveway Was Installed
Clearing and Excavation
The existing driveway surface was completely removed and the area excavated to the correct depth. This allowed us to create the proper levels needed for a strong, long-lasting block paved driveway and smooth access to the property.
Preparation of the Sub Base
A solid MOT Type 1 hardcore sub base was installed and thoroughly compacted. This provides a stable foundation, prevents future movement and ensures the driveway can withstand regular vehicle use.
Setting the Edging
Dark grey edging blocks were installed to frame the driveway neatly and provide a strong contrast against the natural grey paving. The edging also helps retain the blocks and gives the driveway a clean, defined finish.
Laying the Block Paving
Natural grey block paving was laid in a herringbone pattern, ideal for driveways due to its strength and interlocking design. The lighter grey tone creates a bright, modern appearance and works well with the surrounding brickwork and landscaping.
Final Sanding and Compaction
Once laid, kiln dried sand was brushed into the joints and the driveway was mechanically compacted. Final adjustments were made to the edges and the surface was cleaned down, leaving a crisp and professional finish.
The Finished Driveway
The completed driveway has completely refreshed the front of the property. The new surface is level, durable and easy to maintain, offering improved access and everyday practicality. The combination of natural grey paving with darker edging creates a timeless and attractive entrance that the homeowner was delighted with.
