Indian Sandstone Patio | Minster-on-Sea

Project Overview:

This recent patio transformation in Minster-on-Sea involved replacing an outdated, worn concrete slab surface with a sleek and stylish Indian sandstone patio. The original area had become tired and overrun with weeds and staining, offering little practical or visual appeal.

Project Details

Location: Minster-on-Sea

Materials: Indian Sandstone

Process:

Removal & Site Preparation: We began by carefully removing the old, weathered concrete slabs and any remaining mortar or debris from the surface. The existing base was broken up and excavated to the correct depth to allow for a fresh sub-base. To ensure the longevity of the new patio, we installed a durable weed-suppressing membrane across the entire area. This acts as a barrier against the unwanted growth while allowing for proper drainage. A solid Type 1 MOT hardcore sub-base was then laid and compacted in layers using a vibrating plate compactor, forming a stable and well-drained foundation ready for the new paving.

Timber Sleeper Edging & Raised Feature Bed: Next we installed new timber sleeper edging to define the patio’s outer boundary and add structural support. The sleepers were pressure-treated for durability and securely anchored into the ground to withstand weathering and retain shape over time. One section of the patio was designed with an integrated raised feature bed using the same sleepers, offering a practical space for planting or decorative features such as lighting or ornaments. This not only adds height variation and texture to the layout but also helps visually separate the patio from the garden.

Laying the Indian Sandstone Patio: We used high-quality grey Indian sandstone slabs, hand-selected for consistency in colour and finish. Each slab was laid on a full mortar bed to ensure maximum stability and longevity. The stones were arranged in a traditional multi-size pattern, providing  natural, randomised look that enhances the modern yet timeless aesthetic. We took great care to maintain uniform joint widths and incorporated subtle gradients to allow rainwater to run off efficiently, preventing pooling near the house or edges. Finally, a fine jointing compound was brushed in and compacted into the gaps to lock the slabs securely in place and prevent weed intrusion.

Benefits of a Patio:

  • Enhanced Visual Appeal: A modern, clean look that can increase the value of your property.
  • Improved Functionality: A durable and weather-resistant surface, ideal for relaxing and entertaining.
  • Minimal Maintenance: An occasional clean should keep the surface looking new.
  • Improves Drainage: A properly installed patio prevents water pooling, reducing the risk of muddy surfaces.

The finished patio has dramatically improved the garden’s appearance and usability. The clean lines, soft tones, and textured finish of the Indian sandstone create a calm, modern atmosphere that perfectly complements the red brick exterior of the home. With improved accessibility, additional space for outdoor furniture, and a low maintenance design, the client now has a stylish and inviting space to enjoy year-round.
